Two Officers Cleared in 2023 Easter Officer-Involved Shooting

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – An Orange County grand jury cleared two Orlando Police Department officers of criminal wrongdoing after they were involved in an April 2023 shooting.

On April 9, 2023, two OPD officers responded to the 600 block of Grand Street for reports of a possible shooting. They heard a gunshot once they arrived on the scene. While the officers were staged and waiting for backup, a man later identified as Lacorvis Daley, walked out from between two houses and immediately began firing at them. Officers returned fire, fatally striking Daley. Before his contact with OPD officers, Daley is believed to have shot and killed three people in a home on Grand Street.

The state attorney’s use of force policy requires all cases where law enforcement officers use deadly use of force to be presented to a grand jury to determine whether criminal charges are appropriate.

The grand jury was presented with all relevant evidence in the case and returned a no true bill.

The use of force policy allows the grand jury to make a statement regarding policies, procedures and recommendations related to the use of force. The grand jury declined to issue a presentment on the case and chose not to issue a statement on the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The State Attorney’s Office has now closed the use of force case.
